Rescue efforts are ongoing in Niger State following devastating boat accident that claimed dozens of lives. The tragic boat mishap occurred on Tuesday, September 2, in Gausawa, Malale Ward of Borgu Local Government Area, Niger State.

Authorities say the overloaded boat, carrying approximately 90 passengers, collided with an underwater tree stump and capsized around 11:30 a.m. en route from Tungan Sule

Rescue teams, including local divers, community volunteers, and Niger State Emergency Management Agency officers, have so far recovered 29 bodies and rescued 50 survivors.

Two passengers are still reported missing, as search and recovery operations continue.”

Authorities cite overloading and collision with submerged debris—specifically, a tree stump—as the likely causes of the accident.

This incident echoes a recent July tragedy in Shiroro LGA, when an overloaded wooden boat crashed en route to Zumba market—claiming at least 25 lives and leaving several unaccounted for.

These recurring incidents highlight systemic challenges: overcrowding, unchecked vessel conditions, lack of safety compliance, and inadequate infrastructure.

Local officials and community leaders have renewed calls for safer water‑transport measures, including proper regulation, mandatory safety equipment like life jackets, and regular vessel maintenance.”

In response, authorities have pledged to intensify patrols on inland waterways, enforce passenger limits, and ensure life jacket availability—but implementation remains a challenge.
