The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has expressed worry over what it calls a siege to its Lagos Command by the Department of State Services, DSS on Tuesday.

The Commission which revealed this in a Statement signed by its Head, Media and Publicity, Wilson Uwujaren says its Staff were denied entry into their office on Tuesday morning by agents of the Department of State Services, DSS who had barricaded the entrance with armoured personnel carriers.

While the EFCC stresses that the development is strange given that it has cohabited with the DSS in that facility for 20 years without any incident, it explained that by denying its operatives access to their offices, the Commission’s operations at its largest hub with over 500 personnel, hundreds of exhibits and many suspects in detention have been disrupted.

The Commission added that Cases scheduled for court hearing on Tuesday have been aborted, while many suspects who had been invited for questioning left unattended.

EFCC stresses that more alarming is that suspects in detention are left without care with grave implications for their rights as inmates, noting that the development has wilder implications for Nigeria’s fight against Economic and Financial Crimes.

The anti-graft agency says the siege is inconsistent with the synergy expected of agencies working for the same Government and Nation, especially when there are ongoing discussions on the matter.
