Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have reached a historic milestone, climbing to 8th place in the latest FIBA Women’s World Rankings, the highest position ever attained by an African side.
The new rankings, released on Thursday, see Nigeria rise three spots from 11th after amassing 640.1 points, following their record-breaking triumph at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket in Abidjan.
The achievement comes just weeks after D’Tigress made African basketball history by winning a fifth consecutive AfroBasket title, a feat unmatched by any men’s or women’s team on the continent.

With this ranking Nigeria further cements its dominance in African women’s basketball and continues to close the gap on the sport’s global elite.
Meanwhile, The United States remain top with 880.9 points, followed by Australia with 719.6 and France 719.2. while China complete the top four with 712.7 points.
