The Ebonyi state council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ has come down hard on the government, insisting the worsening economic situation has severely retrogressed the growth and development of the media Industry in the country.
At a Press Conference on Wednesday to kick start the 2024 Press Week in the state capital Abakaliki, Council Chairman, Samson Nwafor said the theme for the week “Journalism Amidst Economic Uncertainty” is apt, and reflects the prevailing realities in Nigeria.

Nwafor emphasized that the Press Week will offer opportunities for media practitioners and stakeholders to review the performance of the sector in the face of economic challenges which according to him, has forced a number of media establishments to shutdown across Nigeria, while others have resorted to offering skeleton services.
The Ebonyi State NUJ Council Chairman said the downturn has made cost of living and doing businesses ‘hell’ in the country, Nwafor explained the choice of a medical outreach as part of activities for the 2024 Press Week, saying it was designed to provide the ever busy Journalists in Ebonyi State the space to undergo health checks.
The programme featured lectures on oral hygiene and underlying medical conditions as well as free medical services and counseling to over fifty journalists
