Ebonyi State in South East Nigeria has confirmed its first case of Monkeypox.
State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Daniel Umezuruike made this known in a statement in Abakaliki, the state capital.
The patient has been identified as a 32-year old male farmer from Ugwulangwu, a rural community in Ohaozara Local Government Area, who resides in Abakaliki, the state capital.
The Health Commissioner notes that the patient has been admitted at the state isolation centre and is currently been managed.
According to the statement, about seven contacts of the patient have been identified, and are being followed up.
The statement reads in part, “EOC has been activated to coordinate the outbreak investigation and response across the 13 LGAs in the State and is currently supporting response activities to contain the Monkeypox outbreak via active case search, epidemiological investigation, contact line listing and monitoring of all exposed contacts.”
“Since the onset of this outbreak, Ebonyi has recorded a total of 32 suspected cases with only one confirmed case”.
