Women from Nsulakpa, a local community in Ezzamgbo, on the Ebonyi axis of the Abakaliki – Enugu highway, staged a protest against the increasing rate of road accidents in the area
The protesting women stormed the underbridge area as early as 7 O’clock in the morning carrying placards, shovels, hoes and other construction equipment, calling on governments to return contractors to work on the abandoned Abakaliki – Enugu dual carriage way project.
They threatened further action if work does not resume on the highway and promised to continue to speak up over the series of road mishaps recorded on an almost daily basis on the road as result of the use of only one section of the expressway
ait.live gathered that an accident on Sunday is the latest in a series of in recent times, in which a pregnant woman was said to have been crushed to death and this most likely triggered the protest.
Other locals and road users also lamented the high number of casualties recorded since the road project was abandoned, saying school children were most affected.
ait.live’s attempts to speak to representatives of the Federal Ministry of Works on the matter were unsuccessful
