Niger State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, has decried the rising untold economic hardship in the country saying that the distribution of palliatives is not the solution.

The council recommended sustainable means of mitigating the effects of the hardship on the people rather than the distribution of palliatives and cash, which are mere make-up that is too small to address the root cause of the general hardship in the country.

This was contained in a communique issued at the end of the council’s Congress held at the IBB Pen House Minna.

The Congress also expressed dismay over the resurgence of urban crime in Minna and other major towns.

The meeting, which was presided over by the state chairman Abu Nmodu, deliberated on attacks on residential houses and snatching of bags, phones and valuables in dark spots at night while calling on the police and other security agencies to take proactive measures with a view to reducing the menace.

The Congress also called on the state government to come up with measures to address the scourge occasioned by illegal artisanal miners, especially at M.I Wushishi housing estate in Minna as well as other locations.

The meeting recommended sustainable means of mitigating the effects of the hardship on people, stressing that the distribution of palliatives and cash cannot address the root cause of the general hardship in the country.

The Congress further commended the efforts of the administration of Governor Umar Bago in providing infrastructural facilities and resolved to support the government in achieving its set objectives for the good of the people and state.
