Former Nigerian Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, and President Bola Tinubu, Wednesday attended a commemorative card signing ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The event was held at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), in Lagos where the original ECOWAS treaty was signed in 1975.

General Gowon, the last surviving leader among the original signatories, was honored for his pioneering role in promoting regional integration.

Presidents of Liberia, Togo, and Guinea-Bissau also attended, issuing a joint declaration reaffirming their commitment to ECOWAS’ founding ideals.

Representatives of other member states were present, except for Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, which have withdrawn from the bloc due to political disagreements.
The ceremony continues at the Eko Hotel and Suites.
