The Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, has declared a state of emergency in the sub-region.
President of ECOWAS Commission, Omar Touray, relayed the declaration on Tuesday during the opening ceremony of the 55th meeting of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council in Abuja.
Touray said the developments highlight the imperative of the serious introspection on the future of democracy in the sub-region. He called for urgent measures to address security challenges in the community.
The meeting is convened following the string of coups and botched mutinies in the sub-region.
