Nigeria’s former President, Goodluck Jonathan, wants the economic community of west African states (ECOWAS) to embrace the use of technology in electoral process to ensure free, fair and credible elections in the sub-region.
Jonathan made the plea at the first extra-ordinary session of the ECOWAS parliament holding in Monrovia the Liberia’s capital.
The former Nigerian president says West African citizens have lost confidence in their leaders for using power of incumbency to manipulate the electoral system so as to perpetuate themselves in power.
He insists that with full deployment of technology in electoral process, the sub-region will completely eliminate electoral manipulation and rigging.
Jonathan blamed political leaders for the current crises in the sub-region and charged them to strive to the primary responsibility of sub-regional body.
Briefing parliament on the development of ECOWAS mediation intervention in mali, The former president urged member states to ensure that the authority of heads of state act right by putting the executive on their toes.
Members of parliament commended Goodluck Jonathan for being among the few incumbent African presidents who demonstrated the ideals of statesmanship and a true democrat.
