Two skills acquisition facilities have been inaugurated at the Medium Security Custodial Centre Oko in Benin City, Edo State.
According to the public relations officer of corrections Aminu SULEMAN, the facility consists of an equipped computer lab and a sound studio targeted at training a minimum of thirty inmates per quarter and one hundred and twenty inmates per annum.
Explaining the reason behind the establishment, the deputy Controller of Corrections in charge of the custodial centre Cornelius Olusegun, it was a means of achieving the goal of inmates reformation, rehabilitation and empowerment.
He said through the acquisition of modern skills, the inmates will be enriched and be self sustaining after serving their terms in custody.
He explained that two categories of skills training will be done in the basic use of computer for those without the skills and advanced training for others already having basic knowledge.

With regards to the use of the Sound Studio, Osogun said that it was to encourage music talents discovery, training and specialization to propel the inmates into the multi-billion naira music industry in Nigeria.
He thanked the Controller of Corrections Edo state Command, Emehinola Philomena for the support in achieving this great feat in the Command and promised that it will be utilized to achieve the desired expectations.
Speaking on behalf of the inmates during the brief inauguration ceremony, a visibly excited Ese Ogare expressed his appreciation to the authorities of the Nigerian Correctional Service for establishing the inmates training facilities.
He described it as “a dream come true as he had been looking forward to the availability of these skills acquisition training facilities to create and enhance more talents.
The computer lab and sound studio were self help efforts spearheaded by the Superintendent in charge of the custodial centre Osogun Cornelius
Olusegun to train the inmates free of charge with additional possibility of musical albums production.
