Election monitoring organization, Yiaga Africa has released its mid-day situational report on Edo State governorship election, noting a peaceful start despite logistical challenges.
According to the report, the election commenced peacefully in most polling units, with 95% of units having security presence.
However, logistical issues, including late arrival of INEC officials and materials, poor weather conditions, and inadequate transportation, caused delays.
Addressing journalists in Benin City, the State Capital on Saturday, the Chair of Yiaga Africa’s 2024 Edo Election Mission, Aisha Abdullahi said its observers reported incidents of BVAS malfunction, disruption of voting by political thugs, and vote buying or bribery in some areas.
The organization commended the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and security agencies for arresting suspected vote-buyers.

To address the challenges observed, Yiaga Africa urged the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC to extend voting hours from 2:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. to prevent voter suppression and ensure that all eligible voters can exercise their right to vote.
Yiaga urged Security agencies to enhance their presence in polling units with delays to prevent voter intimidation and ensure a secure environment for voting.
It also wants INEC to ensure full compliance with guidelines and take remedial actions where necessary to maintain the integrity of the electoral process.
Yiaga Africa is also calling on security agencies to respond promptly to reports of voter intimidation and attacks to prevent disruption of the electoral process.
