All is now set for the harvest of maize from the first batch of crops cultivated under the Edo State Government’s Back-to-Farm Initiative, championed by Governor Monday Okpebholo.
The Governor, who led top government officials on an inspection tour of the state-owned farm at Udomi in Edo Central Senatorial District, expressed delight at the impressive output recorded from the project.
On March 25, 2025, Governor Monday Okpebholo launched the Back-to-Farm Initiative as part of efforts to boost food security and align with the Federal Government’s drive to feed the nation.
The initiative covers large expanses of farmland in Iguorhiaki Farm Settlement, Ovia South-West Local Government Area (Edo South), and in the Governor’s hometown, Udomi, Esan Central Local Government Area (Edo Central) for the cultivation of maize
Seven months after the launch, the Udomi maize farm is ripe for harvest. The second phase of cultivation has also recorded significant growth, signaling the success of the initiative.
During the inspection, Governor Okpebholo personally examined the yield, plucking a few maize cobs to assess the produce. Pleased with the result, he described the farm as a testament to his administration’s commitment to translating policies into tangible benefits for the people through practical governance.
The Director of Agricultural Services, Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Osarobo David, who conducted the Governor and his entourage round the farm, confirmed that the maize had reached full harvesting stage.
Earlier in the day, Governor Okpebholo also inspected ongoing construction work at the Flyover, Ramat Park, Benin City, to assess the level of progress before proceeding to the Udomi farm inspection.
