The need for parents to get appropriate information on sickle cell disease was the focal point at an awareness program organized for corps members by the National Youths Service Corps in Edo state.

The program themed awareness, education and hope is to ensure that communities get the basic knowledge about sickle cell and to join other advocates to push for necessary interventions to reduce sickle cell disease to the barest minimum

Sickle cell disease is an inherited blood disorder that causes the body to produce abnormally shaped red blood cells which prevents oxygen to be delivered to the body tissues and causing excruciating and chronic pain episodes for the sufferers.

It is on this basis that a non governmental organization Flourish Foundation for women and girls under the National Youths Service Corps is taking time to educate corps members posted to Edo state on the need to promote sickle cell advocacy.

This is to ensure that communities in the state understand the disease , carry out necessary interventions, genotype testing and to know what can be done to help prevent the painful family distraction.

Menstrual hygiene also took the focus of discussions as a girl child advocate felt the need to let the corps members know the importance of vaginal cleanliness and healthy living just as corps members took the initiative to donate sanitary pads to the female corps members at the camp

A Sickle cell vanguard Comprising corps members was inaugurated to carry out all necessary interventions on sickle cell disease in Communities in Edo state.
