The issue of the suspension of the chairmen of the eighteen local councils in Edo state by the House of Assembly for two months over allegations of insubordination, gross misconduct and corruption levelled against them has again come up.
Addressing Journalists in Benin City, chairman of the state caretaker committee of the PDP, Anthony Aziegbemi claims that the action which was carried out on December 17, 2024 goes against the local government autonomy.
He attributes the security challenge at the grassroots level in Edo to what he describes as an absence of the elected councils chairmen and their vices.

Speaking on the side of the All Progressives Congress, APC is the Minority Leader of the House, Eric Okaka of Owan East Constituency.
Okaka claims that the chairmen have since been impeached and as such the talk of their suspension is no longer valid.
He also notes that those now in charge of the councils are capable of promoting good governance at the local level working in synergy with Governor Monday Okpebholo.
