Ahead of the September 19 governorship election in Edo State, the State Security Council has resolved to mop up illegal firearms in circulation in the state.
This decision was taken after the monthly meeting of the Security Council in Government House, Benin City.
Addressing reporters after the meeting, the Chief Security Officer of the State, Governor Godwin Obaseki, and Commissioner of Police, Johnson Kokumo, said the deliberate effort is being made to rid the state of illegal arms.
Governor Obaseki also expressed worry at the rate of community transmission of the coronavirus pandemic which is now at 80 per cent.
Part of the resolutions of the council is to increase risk communication and enlightenment campaigns to enable residents to reduce their chances of being infected.

The relevant security agencies will beam their searchlight on those violating the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control protocol for the prevention of COVID-19.
