EFCC Arrests 2 Bankers In Benue For Fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Makurdi Zonal Directorate has arrested two Union Bank Staffs in Makurdi for stealling the sum of  N4,199,500.00 (Four Million One Hundred and Ninety Nine  Thousand Five Hundred Naira) only, belonging to a deceased customer of the bank.

The suspects are:  Idah Ogoh and Agbo Okwute.

A statement by the head of public affairs EFCC Zonal command Makurdi Kassim Yahaya indicates that the duo were arrested by Operatives of Makurdi Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC based on a petition against them by the bank on a fraudulent debit card of a deceased customer Emmanuel  Azer Agenna account  no 0025317753 by two of its Sales and Service Associates (SSA).

According to Yahaya, trouble began when the family of the deceased sought to obtain the balance of the deceased for probate processing. 

He futher explained that the family disputed the balance given to them by the bank and subsequently sent a complaint letter to the bank regarding unauthorised debits on the account. 

Yahaya said the bank  carried out an  internal investigation and its findings revealed that a debit card  was requested/ procured on the deceased customer account on May 10, 2023 after the demised of the customer by one of it Sales and Service Associates one Ifah Ogoh and was authorised by the bank on the same date.

Accordingly preliminary findings by the bank showed the procured/ primed card by Idah Ogoh was handed over to another Sales and Service Associates one Agbo Omwute who eventually delivered the card to a fraudster to transfer/withdraw funds from the account of the deceased.

According to Yahaya on May 11, 2023 it was also discovered that there was a transfer of the sum of N400,000.00( Four Hundred Thousand Naira) only from the said account  to a Guranteee Trust Bank (GTB) account Number 0261153964 belonging to one Daniel Sesugh.

The findings also revealed that Agbo Okwute was noticed at the ATM Machine where the transfer took place.

A Similar withdrawal of the sum of N141,000.00( One Hundred and Forty One Thousand Naira) only was made and another N90,000.00( Ninety Thousand Naira) only was deposited  into Agbo Okwute’s Child account number 0129355112 domicile with Union Bank on the same date.

The suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.
