A war of words is brewing between the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC and the Nigerian Bar Association NBA following allegations that security operatives of the EFCC Makurdi Zonal office assaulted the chairman of the Benue State Chapter of the NBA, Justin Gbagir.

The NBA chairman who was hospitalised following the said fracas explained that he went to the EFCC office following the detention of his branch treasurer Aver Shima by the anti-graft body.

Gbagir said he was denied entry into the premises so he went across the street and was still being harassed which led to a verbal exchange.
He said the State Attorney general and other government officials arrived on the scene and together with them he gained entrance into the EFCC office, but the misunderstanding had escalated to the point of him getting thoroughly beaten up.

A statement by the anti-graft agency’s head media and publicity Wilson Uwujaren however denied the allegation which he insists is “false and orchestrated to portray the commission as draconian and uncivil”.

The anti-graft agency’s media handler went further to label the NBA chairman as an aggressor who led thugs to breach the security of the Makurdi office in an attempt to forcibly set free a suspect under interrogation.

He maintained that the NBA chairman should be remorseful for his action instead of spewing out falsehood to the media
