ENDSARS Protest: SARS Gone Rogue?

ENDSARS

In the last few weeks; Nigeria has become a hotbed of angry protests; calling for the end of the activities of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad, popularly known as SARS!

The protest tagged #EndSARS began on Social Media; attracting global attention to the atrocities of the infamous police unit; accused of extortions and extrajudicial killings in the country.

It’s easy to become a suspect if you’re young and wear tattoos, dreadlocks or any other “funny” hairstyles.

At the forefront of the #EndSARS campaign are angry Nigerian youths; many of who have been at the end of brutality from SARS officers.

Nigeria’s music star, David Adeleke popularly known as “Davido” joined in the fray; leading a pack of protesters in Abuja to #ENDSARS.

Davido’s voice added to the relentless agitations of millions of other frustrated Nigerian youths have finally caught the ears of the Nigerian government- forcing it to disband SARS with immediate effect; even as it looks for new tactics to reform the entire Police establishment many Nigerians now view curiously as roguish.

The Nigerian authorities eventually got the message after over 100,000 citizens unfollowed President Muhammadu Buhari on Twitter; asking him to act or live with the consequences of the endless protests.

But it’s not the first time authorities will clampdown on SARS’ roguish tendencies!

They have returned every single time with even more venom; unleashing untold terror on the same citizens they’re paid to protect.

Even after government announced the disbandment of SARS; the agitations have persisted in many cities as Police and angry youths continue to clash.
