Edo State Government has condemned in the strongest terms recent posts circulating on social media platforms which it claims are inciting and urging people to disrupt the operations of the Benin High Court on Monday, July 15, 2024.
It described the alleged attempts made to interfere with the judicial process through threats and displays aimed at prompting public unrest as highly disconcerting.
A statement signed and released by the Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, noted that the state government is aware that some politicians are allegedly behind the plan to sponsor violence with the aim of disrupting peace to score cheap political points.
He said it is imperative to emphasize that the rule of law must prevail, and all arms of government must be allowed to carry out their functions without fear of intimidation or disruption, as the sanctity of institutions must be upheld at all times.
Nehikhare urged youths in the state not to allow themselves to be used to perpetuate violence and cause crisis and also called on parents to protect their children from being exploited by persons with ulterior motives.
He revealed that the State Government will take all lawful actions against any individual or group found to be involved in activities that undermine the peace in the state.
The Commissioner urged all law-abiding citizens to reject and ignore any calls to disrupt the peace in the State and to refrain from engaging in any actions that could jeopardise public order as it is only through respect for the law and due process that there can be a just and orderly society for all.
The case between some suspended Enigie and the Oba of Benin, challenging their suspension from office, is expected to come up for hearing on the said July 15, 2024.
