Enugu State has officially joined the ranks of Nigerian States operating their own commercial airline.
The new carrier, named Enugu Air, was launched on Monday — making Enugu the third State in the country to venture into the aviation business.
The inaugural ceremonial flight of Enugu Air arrived at the newly upgraded international wing of the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, from Lagos.
The aircraft, piloted by Enugu-born Captain Kelechi Ossai, is one of three Embraer jets in the airline’s initial fleet, positioning Enugu Air as the latest entrant into Nigeria’s expanding aviation sector.

While commissioning the airline, Nigeria’s Aviation Minister, Festus Keyamo assured of federal government’s support to ensure its success.
He revealed that approvals for regional routes out of Enugu are already in progress, as he also defended the federal authorities’ decision to concession the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, saying it is a necessity.
For Governor Peter Mbah, the launch of Enugu Air is not just another infrastructure project, but a bold economic enabler.
According to the Governor, the airline will begin with a triangular route connecting Enugu, Abuja, and Lagos with plans to expand to other key cities like Port Harcourt, Owerri, Benin, and Kano, and eventually open up international destinations.
