Enugu Govt Demolishes Kidnappers Suspected Hideouts

The Enugu State Government in Southeast Nigeria has begun a massive clamp down on suspected kidnappers and facilities linked to their activities, with the demolition of structures identified as hideouts for kidnappers and other criminals.

Among the buildings already demolished is a large poultry farm at Ogbeke Nike in the Enugu East Council Area, where kidnappers allegedly used to hold their hostages.

Ogbeke Nike, a quiet community located about 30 minutes drive from Enugu town, along the Ugwuogo Nike – Opi Nsukka highway, is primarily inhabited by farmers, many of whom run poultry and piggery businesses.

One such farm, reportedly owned by a South African-based woman, stands out, not for its poultry operations, but as a front for an alleged kidnapping ring.

Police sources reveal that operatives have been trailing the criminal group for over three months.

The suspected kidnappers are said to have abducted victims and held them at the farm, until ransoms were paid.

A recent Police operation, prompted by a security tip-off from locals and accounts from some victims, led to a raid on the hideout. Several suspects were killed in a gun battle, while others were apprehended.

Many locals refused to speak on camera, claiming ignorance of the illegal activities.

The Enugu State Government is invoking its Criminal Code Law to demolish these structures.

In addition to the Nike farm, another structure in Nkwubor-Emene, an uncompleted building, was also demolished for being used in the same illicit business.

The Enugu State Government warns property owners to thoroughly vet potential tenants before leasing their facilities.
