Environmental activists in the Niger Delta region want the Nigerian Federal government to delay the approval of the sales of Shell Petroleum Development Company onshore facilities asset to indigenous oil firms, until the environmental degradation within the region is properly addressed.
Addressing a News Conference in Abuja on Tuesday, the activists under ‘The Center for Peace and Environmental Justice’, urged President Bola Tinubu to protect the sovereignty of Nigeria and take decisive actions to rectify the long-standing injustices suffered by the Niger Delta oil and gas producing communities.
The activists said they will institute a suit restraining the sale of those assets, if the Federal government fails to do the needful.
On the Ogoni cleanup project, the activists described the exercise as ‘political’, claiming that nothing much has been achieved.
