Lagos Residents have been reminded of the need to take responsibility for their plastic waste and comply with ongoing enforcement on ban single use plastics to avoid Sanctions.
Speaking at a forum on environmental sustainability, some representatives of the State Government and UNIDO noted that plastic waste remains one of the most visible and pressing environmental and public health challenges globally and in Nigeria .
While Plastic Consumption has increased significantly, Systems for collection, Segregation and recycling of plastic waste has not expanded at the same pace, resulting in Plastic lecking into streets, Drainage systems and water ways with attendant public health risk .
How to better resolve this issue brought together government representatives, environmental stakeholders, students, traders,waste collectors, and UNIDO representatives here to promote sustainable plastic waste management.
On the ban on certain single use plastics and the implementation of extended producers’ responsibility framework, the permanent secretary office of environmental services represented at this forum stressed the role of compliance in achieving environmental sustainability.
Plastic pollution does not only constitute a nuisance to the environment, but posses severe health risks to people when certain harmful chemicals are released into content through exposure to high temperature.
