The Taraba State Government and the European Union have engaged in a partnership to promote religious tolerance, and curb violent religious conflicts in the State.
The partnership aims to encourage early dialogue on religious sensitive conflicts, through a capacity building training for relevant stakeholders in the State.
Violent conflicts over religious beliefs and doctrines are common happenings in Northern Nigeria, with lives and property lost in most cases.
The need for pre-emptive measures and enlightenment on religious tolerance and freedom have been taken a step further by the Taraba State Government in partnership with the European Union under the Search for Common Ground project, where dialogue between aggrieved parties will be established.
Relevant stakeholders across the 16 Local Government Areas including the media and security agencies have been trained on early warning signs and management of religious conflict situations in the State.
The partnership is also advocating for the freedom of all citizens to practice their religious beliefs as enshrined in the constitution, and promote a culture of peaceful inter-religious existence.
The partnership between the Taraba State Government, and the European Union will also mitigate conflicts over natural resources, especially farmer-herder conflicts.
And this is in turn expected to have a positive impact on the large scale mechanised farming project launched by Taraba State Governor, Agbu Kefas.
The collaboration between the European Union and the Taraba State Government also targets to set up quick response mechanisms for conflict situations in the State to avoid escalation.
