Ex-AGF Adoke absent in court, stranded in UAE over COVID-19 counsel

The former Attorney General of the Federation AGF and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke, who is standing trial for alleged money laundering charges before the federal high court Abuja is said to be stranded in the United Arab Emirate UAE, where he tested positive for the COVID-19.

Adoke’s lead counsel, Kanu Agabi made this known on Monday during the trial.

He told the court that his client tested positive to the disease at the point of his return to Nigeria, and was subsequently held back by the authorities

Adoke and a businessman, Aliyu Abubakar, are facing charges by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to the tune of $1.2b.

He also said Adoke later tested negative to the coronavirus after his treatment but was unable to get flight to the country as ordered by the court but he is expected back in Nigeria on January 12, 2021.

Adoke was granted leave by the court to travel abroad for medical examination on December. 11, 2020 and be back on January 10, 20021 following the release of his international passport by the court.

He, however, said an application has earlier been filed on the 4th of January for an extension of time to avail Adoke more time to take care of himself.

He then prayed the court to extend the time within which Adoke would be allowed to appear in court for his trail .

The application was not opposed by the prosecution counsel, Bala Sanga.

Justice lnyang Ekwo subsequently adjourned the matter until March 1 for continuation of the matter.
