Nigeria’s former Foreign Affairs Minister, Professor Joy Ogwu has died, aged 79 at a hospital in New York.
Professor Ogwu served as Nigeria’s top diplomat from August 2006 till the end of the President Olusegun Obasanjo administration in May the following year.
A renowned international relations scholar, Ogwu was subsequently appointed by President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua as Nigeria’s Permanent Representative at the United Nations in New York, where she served for nine years, straddling the Presidents Jonathan and Buhari administrations.
Professor Ugwu was earlier in her career the Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, NIIA, where she gained recognition for her expertise in the area of disarmament.
