Some social medical workers have called on relevant authorities for support systems as intervention for the rising cases of trauma and mental health disorders amongst Nigerians.
Speaking at a forum in Lagos with the theme “ Assessing And Understanding Trauma In Clinical Social Work Practice “they noted that if nothing urgent is done, there will be an increase in suicidal cases , given the growing Insecurity and socio- economic challenges prevailing in the country.
Daniel Ellu is a social Medical Health worker at the Nueropsychiatric Hospital Yaba in Lagos .
He is worried about the increasing number of patients with trauma related problems visiting their facility .
Trauma as described by medical experts is one or more events that could affect the mental state of a person due to his characteristics.

Given the unabating spate of killings , kidnappings and socio- economic challenges, many Nigerians are getting traumatized .
The quest for a lasting solution informed this conference and its theme ” Assessing And Understanding Trauma In Clinical Social Practice .
To better utilize medical social workers in Nigeria , speakers at the conference called for a quick passage of the social work bill .
Another issue brought to the fore is the need for relevant stakeholders to help subsidize the cost of mental health care in Nigeria .
