The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has appealed for patience and cooperation from Airport users as its “Go Cashless” Programme officially commenced at the access gates of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja.
In a statement on its X account, FAAN acknowledged the heavy traffic build-up recorded at the airport gates on 1st of March, which was the first day of implementation attributing it to last-minute registration by motorists who had not obtained their Go Cashless cards ahead of the rollout.
According to the Authority, despite prior notices, public announcements and a clear timeline for migration to cashless payments, many motorists chose to register at the gates, resulting in pressure on toll lanes and temporary gridlock.
To manage the situation, FAAN said it has deployed additional personnel, increased registration points to fast-track card issuance, and strengthened on-ground coordination to improve traffic flow.
FAAN emphasised that the transition is designed to ensure faster processing, improved transparency, reduced cash-handling risks, and a more efficient airport environment.
However, the first two days of implementation have been marred by significant disruption, particularly at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.
Passengers traveling to domestic destinations reported missing flights after being caught in traffic congestion caused by delays at the toll gate linking the international wing to the domestic terminal.
