The Presidency has responded to claims made by former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, regarding President Bola Tinubu’s role in the June 12, 1993, presidential election struggle.
Lamido alleged that Tinubu supported the annulment of the election and only rose to prominence after the formation of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO).
The Presidency described Lamido’s claims as “patently false” and “a distortion of history.”
According to the Presidency, Tinubu’s mother, Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, did not mobilize market women to support the annulment, as Lamido claimed.
The statement highlighted President Tinubu’s contributions to the June 12 struggle, including his condemnation of the annulment on the Senate floor on August 19, 1993.
Tinubu also played a leading role in NADECO, providing material resources to fuel the struggle.
The Presidency accused Lamido of attempting to rewrite history for political reasons and advised him to check his facts before spreading falsehoods.
The statement added that President Tinubu remains a steadfast advocate for democracy, unlike Lamido and others who capitulated in the face of military oppression.
