Ahead of the February 12 FCT Area Council elections some eligible voters say they are yet to collect their Permanent Voter Cards.

Those who spoke to AIT on expressed concerns over the inability of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to make their cards available nine days to the Area Council elections.

Abaji is one of the 6 Area Councils in the Federal Capital Territory with an area of 992 km2 and a population of 98,000 as put forward by the 2006 National Population and housing census.

The Area Council is populated mostly by the Egbira, Ganagana and Hausa people with the Egbira and Ganagana being the majority.

However, the record at the Area Council office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, shows that Abaji Area Council has a voting population of thirty six thousand, eight hundred and forty seven eligible voters.

Out of this figure, only a few persons have their Permanent Voter’s Cards.

Some electorate expressed concerns that many of them may be disenfranchised if the electoral empire fails to rise up to the occasion.

The people also called on relevant authorities to ensure that the FCT Area Council elections are free, fair, credible and inclusive.
