The Federal Capital Territory Administration, FCTA, has commenced a four-day Basic Life Support training for health workers from seven hospitals across the FCT.
The American Heart Association-certified programme is designed to strengthen emergency response and reduce preventable deaths in public hospitals.
The training, holding at Asokoro District Hospital, brings together health workers from Asokoro, Maitama, Wuse, Gwarinpa, Kuje, Kubwa and Nyanya hospitals.
Declaring the exercise open, the Mandate Secretary, Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe, said the programme would equip health workers with skills to respond promptly to medical emergencies while patients await further treatment.
Fasawe said the participants are expected to share the knowledge acquired with their colleagues and members of the public, in support of the National Community CPR Initiative.
She added that the FCTA is working towards establishing Code Blue Teams across its hospitals to ensure that patients requiring urgent attention receive immediate care.
“Our goal is to consistently record success stories from ‘no pulse to resuscitation’.”
The Mandate Secretary said the training would be extended to other hospitals in the FCT, with basic equipment and other requirements provided to strengthen emergency response and patient care.
For the Medical Director of Asokoro District Hospital, Dr. Oluseyi Ashaolu, the training is timely, and the skills acquired could make the difference between life and death in emergency situations.
The training coordinator, Consultant Anaesthetist Dr. Rosemary Nwokorie, said the programme is being conducted in batches, with the first batch holding on August 21 and 22, and the second scheduled for September 4 and 5, 2026.
The exercise also includes a Stop the Bleeding course, designed to help health workers control severe bleeding in trauma patients before definitive medical care.
The team of instructors is led by Trauma Surgeon, Dr. Onyedika Godfrey Okoye, of the Trauma Centre, National Hospital, Abuja.
Participants will undergo assessments at the end of the training, with certificates awarded to those who meet the required standard.
The FCTA says the initiative is part of its broader effort to strengthen emergency care and improve public confidence in government hospitals.
