Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, says the country’s growing population and housing needs leave no room for poor supervision, substandard materials or the use of unqualified personnel.
He spoke at the 56th Annual Conference of the Nigerian Institute of Building.
As demand for housing grows, so too are concerns about the safety and quality of buildings.
The Federal Government says professionalism must be non-negotiable if Nigeria is to provide housing that is safe, affordable and sustainable.
The government wants qualified professionals involved throughout the construction process, with greater attention to supervision and the quality of building materials.
For the Nigerian Institute of Building, recurring cases of building collapse underline the consequences when standards are ignored.
NIOB President Abimbola Kolade says strict compliance with professional standards is critical to reducing preventable building failures.
The institute is also seeking stronger collaboration with government and private developers to tackle the activities of unqualified practitioners.
It says greater public awareness is equally important, particularly for property owners and developers making decisions about who handles their projects.
For the institute, safer buildings begin with professional oversight, from design and construction through to completion.
