The Federal Government and Enugu State in the Southeast region of Nigeria have launched action plans to significantly redevelop the mining sector in the coal-rich State.

At the inaugural meeting of the Enugu State chapter of the Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee (MIREMCO) on Thursday, the Chairman, Samuel Okoro, outlined the Committee’s plans to enhance the productivity of the mining sector, tackle economic sabotage and non-compliance, which according to him have severely impacted both on the economy and the environment.

Diversifying the Nigerian economy from an over-reliance on oil to other revenue-generating sectors, such as solid minerals and agriculture, remains a top priority for the current Federal Government. The aim being to increase the country’s GDP, with 50% of it coming from the mining sector.

Enugu State which is rich in solid minerals, has much to contribute to this vision. However, the State faces challenges, including low productivity.

Available data shows that over 70 mineral titles have been issued, but fewer than 10 are currently operational.

The Mineral Resources and Environmental Management Committee (MIREMCO) which is mandated by the Federal Government to tackle these bottlenecks, has swiftly rolled out actionable plans to boost productivity.

Beyond the issue of production, there is also the matter of accurately declaring the quantities mined to increase revenue generation from the sector.

Currently, Enugu State generates less than N60 million annually in royalties, a far below the expected revenue generation from the sector.

The Committee’s Chairman, Samuel Okoro, emphasized that while aiming for productivity and revenue growth, it is also mandated to ensure that mining activities are conducted in a safe and environmentally responsible manner.
