Authorities of the FCT Emergency Management Department have promised to partner critical stakeholders to develop response plans that will minimize the impact of flooding in Abuja Municipal Area council, AMAC, and other vulnerable areas in the territory.

The Acting Director General of the FCT Emergency Management Department, Abdulrahaman Mohamed, said this during a Stakeholders meeting in Abuja following the 2025 flood outlook by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, (NIMET), which highlighted AMAC and Bwari Area Council’s as part of the areas that will experience heavy flooding in 2025.

The meeting which had representatives from disaster management agencies identified diversion of waterways and distortions to the Abuja Master Plan as major contributors to flooding in many parts of Abuja.

In efforts to identify areas of vulnerability ahead of the 2025 flood predictions, a site assessment was conducted in Apo-Dutse, one of the communities affected by flooding in 2024.

Other stakeholders expressed hope that the current sensitization campaigns in the FCT will discourage many from staying in flood prone areas.

The stakeholders while assuring residents of Abuja of their commitment to protecting lives and property in the territory, however called for inter-agency training on what is expected before, during and after emergencies to attack situations as they come.
