The Federal Government has begun sensitizing stakeholders on the planned implementation of the Green Tax surcharge on selected categories of imported vehicles under the 2026 Fiscal Policy.
The exercise, anchored by the Nigeria Customs Service, brought together traders and customs agents from Zones B and D in Kano to explain the policy direction, essence and its implementation.
The Green Tax surcharge is part of the federal government’s fiscal and environmental reforms policy, aimed at reducing emissions by imposing a surcharge on specified vehicle categories.
The sensitization is intended to prepare importers and other stakeholders ahead of the policy’s implementation nationwide.
Comptroller of Tariff and Trade, Muktar Muhazu, says the percentage to be charged is two and four respectively, and the levy does not apply to all vehicles
The Zonal Coordinator for Customs Zone B, represented at the event, said the awareness campaign is to ensure stakeholders understand the policy before implementation.
The Nigeria Customs Service says the Green Tax surcharge will be processed automatically through its digital customs platform once the nationwide sensitization is completed and the policy takes effect.
