Nigerians can now purchase 50kg bag of rice at N40,000 as Federal Government has flagged off the sale of 30,000 metric tons of rice at subsidised rate.
Speaking at the flag-off ceremony in Abuja, Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, said that intending beneficiaries would be verified using relevant identification mediums such as the National Identification Number, NIN and phone numbers to forestall multiple accesses to the commodity.
As one of the present administration’s numerous efforts to cushion the impact of the high cost of food commodities in the market, the Federal Government has officially commissioned the commencement of the sale of subsidised rice.
Highlighting the process for accessing the food intervention, the Minister insists that to qualify for the “one person per bag of rice intervention”, beneficiaries must pass the required measures put in place as multi-disciplinary conditions to ensure transparency.
Apart from the 30,000 metric tons of rice, government also released 42,000 metric tons of Assorted Food Commodities, AFC to be distributed among vulnerable households in the country.
Recall, In July 2024, the Federal Government announced the sale of staple food like rice at a subsidised rate of N40,000 per 50kg bag. Following that announcement, the Human Resources Management Department of the Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs asked civil servants to register for the sale of the food item with their Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System, IPPIS.
It is expected that with the injection of the 30,000 metric tons which represents 1,000 trucks of 30 metric tons into Nigeria’s food balance sheet, prices of the staple will crash dramatically.
