As the rainy season gets intense, the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has restated its commitment towards alleviating the plight of flood victims in the country.

This is as no fewer than 1,000 flood victims across 13 Local Government Areas of Katsina State are to benefit from relief items to be distributed by NEMA.

With the volume of rainfall on the increase as a result of the August break and its attendant impact on flood prone areas, the NEMA says it is taking proactive measures to cushion the negative effects.

The Agency demonstrated this when the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development Sadiya Umar Farouq in company of the NEMA Director General, Mustapha Ahmed handed over the relief materials to the state government for onward delivery to 13 Local Government Areas affected by flood.

Speaking shortly after the handover ceremony, the NEMA Director-General, Mustapha Ahmed said the relief items came in seven trailer loads comprising food and non-food items.

He said that, as part of proactive measures, the Agency has urged State Governments to inaugurate local emergency management committees in order to tackle disaster at the grassroots level.

Ahmed further called on residents of states to desist from building on water channels, blockage of drainages and move from flood-prone communities to safer areas and take seriously the predictions released by the agency by moving to highlands.
