The Federal Ministry of works says the delivery date of the Akpongbon Bridge section of the Eko Bridge, earlier fixed for December 2022, has been extended to May 2023 because of the emergency repair of the Ijora Olopa section of the Bridge after a fire incident on November 4.

Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola in the company of officials of Lagos State Government during an inspection tour of the burnt Eko Bridge said the frequent fire incidents under the Eko Bridge due to the illegal activities of a few residents could lead to the bridge’s collapse.

Fashola further explained that a joint action by the Federal and Lagos State governments is underway to evict traders and illegal occupants under Lagos bridges to save lives and protect infrastructure.
The minister however concluded that tough laws will be enacted soon by the Legislature to protect the bridges across the country.
