The Nigerian Government has intensified preparations for the introduction and rollout of Lenacapavir (LEN) as a pre-exposure prophylaxis option in Nigeria, as part of efforts to strengthen HIV prevention and accelerate progress toward epidemic control.
In a statement signed by Toyin Aderibigbe, Deputy Director, Media and Publicity at the National Agency for the Control of AIDS, the government said Lenacapavir is an injectable PrEP option administered twice yearly, offering a convenient alternative to daily oral PrEP.
According to the statement, Nigeria is positioning itself for a structured and quality-assured rollout of LEN PrEP in priority states through coordinated efforts, regulatory approval, system preparedness, trained personnel, and community engagement strategies.
The agency disclosed that significant milestones have already been achieved. These include the completion of landscape and readiness assessments across 10 states: Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Benue, Cross River, Ebonyi, the Federal Capital Territory, Gombe, Kano, Kwara, and Lagos.
It also confirmed regulatory approval by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control as well as the successful conduct of a National Training of Trainers in Abuja.
The statement further revealed that commodities are expected to arrive in the country in March 2026, paving the way for phased implementation.
