The Federal Government has announced the postponement of the special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session earlier scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, in honour of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The session was put on hold due to the state funeral for the former leader, which will take place on the same day in his hometown, Daura, Katsina State.

In recognition of Buhari’s legacy, the Federal Government has also declared Tuesday a public holiday nationwide.

According to a statement issued on Monday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, a new date for the special FEC session will be announced by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation after the funeral rites.

President Bola Tinubu had called for the special session to honour Buhari for what he described as his “invaluable contributions” to Nigeria’s development.

The remains of the former President are expected to arrive from London by noon on Tuesday and will be buried later that day in accordance with Islamic rites.

Buhari died on Sunday at a London clinic after a prolonged illness. In response, President Tinubu declared a seven-day national mourning period, with flags ordered to fly at half-staff across the country.

Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila were also dispatched to London to condole with Buhari family and accompany the body back home.
