The Nigerian government says it is formulating guidelines for the development of a plastic waste management policy to reduce pollution from non-biodegradable materials.
Minister of Environment, Mohammed Abdullahi who disclosed this at a stakeholders meeting in Abuja said the guidelines will promote sustainable a plastic value chain and business opportunities geared towards achieving a circular economy.
The minister also said the federal government is engaging the organized private sector to develop guidelines and a model for sustainable plastic waste management in the country.

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization, UNIDO and the government of Japan who are partners in the project say Nigeria holds a strategic position in waste management in Africa which they say explains their level of participation.
Nigeria is reputed for producing considerable quantities of plastic for economic considerations, littered across the environment after use, thereby causing harm to humans and the ecosystem.
Available records show Nigeria currently recycles less than 10% of its waste
