The Federal Government has launched the N110 billion National Youth Skills Programme, NYSP, to tackle one of the Nigeria’s most pressing issues, youth unemployment.
Minister of Youth Development, Dr. Jamila Ibrahim made the announcement on Thursday in Abuja. She said the initiative is crafted to ignite the flame of potentials in youth and pave the way for a brighter future.
Ibrahim added that the programme is not just a new initiative but a transformative strategy targeting 11 key sectors that are vital to the country’s development and have the capacity to create millions of jobs.
Among the sectors targeted are agriculture, renewable energy, and digital economy that can potentially drive Nigeria’s future by unlocking potentials with the right skills and training.
The Minister explained that with NYSP, youths cannot only find employment but also become the driving force behind the targeted sectors, creating a ripple effect of job opportunities.
The initiative aims to reduce youth unemployment by as much as 20% over the next five years and to achieve up to a 50% increase in youth-led enterprises with regular assessments, feedback loops, and data analysis.
