President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the allocation of 5% of the national education budget to sustain Technical, Vocational Education and Training, TVET projects nationwide.

This was confirmed by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, who also revealed that the TVET programme, which is designed to equip Nigerian youths with practical and sustainable livelihood skills has already engaged 250,000 applicants within eight months.

The 250,000 trainees enrolled across more than 2,600 skill development centres nationwide for the programme aimed at training over 960,000 youths in total, drawn from an initial 1.3 million applicants who registered within the first 10 days of the portal opening.

The initiative which focuses on 28 high-demand trades, including fashion and garment making, solar installation, hospitality, livestock farming, GSM repair, plumbing, and tiling, is structured to be 80–90% practical and 10–20% theory.

According to the Nigerian government, the ultimate goal is to empower youths not merely as job seekers but as employers of labour and drivers of economic growth.

Some youths undergoing tfe training express their willingness to utilise the skills for the benefit of the country while applauding the plan to provide participants with starter packs and business grants upon completion.
