In a bid to fast track food security, create jobs and wealth, the Nigerian Government says its embarking on national soil survey and fertility mapping.
Speaking at a national workshop on soil survey The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Sabo Nanono, said government has approved the upgrade of four soil and water laboratories that would be used for the survey and fertility mapping analysis.
The Minister was represented by the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Agriculture, Enerst Umakhihe.
Farmers, scientists, soil doctors and policy makers were all parts of the workshop to brainstorm and discuss the soil condition in Nigeria.

According to them, Nigerian soil has been fragmented, and thus there is the need for survey and mapping to support the country’s agricultural productivity.
The workshop revealed that Government will upgrade four national soil and water laboratories located in Ibadan, Umudike, Kaduna, and Abuja, the workshop also noted that the laboratories have been equipped with modern spectral laboratory equipment (MIR), that would ensure that the data generated from the national survey would be accepted internationally.
The theme of the workshop is “Enhancing food security in Nigeria through the production of detailed soil survey and soil fertility maps.”
