FG To Strengthen Environmental Governance, Reviews Draft Regulations

The Federal Government is taking steps towards strengthening environmental governance with the final review of three draft National Environmental Regulations.

At a stakeholders’ critique workshop in Abuja, Director General, National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), Innocent Barikor, said the updated frameworks align the country with global environmental commitments while promoting innovation, green economic growth, and sustainable industrial practices.

A stakeholder workshop to review and adopt the final drafts of three critical environmental regulations for Nigeria.

The updated frameworks focus on the Energy, Chemicals, and Pharmaceutical sectors, as well as the Import and Export industry.

Director General, National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency NESREA, Innocent Barikor says the regulations are designed to strengthen compliance with global environmental standards and safeguard public health, while promoting sustainable industrial growth.

Carried out under the United Nations Environment Programme- UNEP Special Project on Strengthening National, Infrastructural, and Human Capacity for Sound Chemicals and Waste Management in Nigeria, the new Import and Export Control Regulation specifically targets banned substances and hazardous waste, ensuring tighter monitoring and enforcement to protect the environment and human health.

For NESREA, the updated regulations mark a significant milestone in Nigeria’s environmental governance, ensuring a sustainable balance between economic growth and environmental protection.
