In view of the current economic downturns in the country which has greatly affected cost of living, particularly prices of food items, Nigerians have been advised to diversify and take full advantage of irrigation farming to avert famine and starvation.
Managing Director Lower Benue River Basin Development Authority Mohammed Addra, who made the call while briefing Journalists in Makurdi the State capital, says the agency ran with the Federal Government’s vision of dry season farming since its launch in Benue last year.
As part of measures to encourage residents to key into dry season farming the Minister for water resources and Sanitation Joseph Ustev had in 2023 flagged off irrigation farming in parts of Benue, including Makurdi the State capital last year.
The Lower Benue River Basin Development Authorities also swung into action by irrigating and beefing up security on the vast expanse of land at Mbaku, around the capital to encourage interested farmers cultivate mixed crops all year round.
The Managing director equally speaks on other areas in different localities even in Nassarawa and Plateau States where such efforts have since began to yield positive results.
Dry season farming, according to experts, is no doubt a good investment with quick returns, especially with the skyrocketing prices of food items.
