A massive fire broke out at the popular Karu Market on the outskirts of Abuja city centre thursday evening.
According to eyewitnesses, the fire started around 8pm and spread rapidly across the market. AIT Live gathered that the fire began at the informal section of the market where highly flammable materials are commonly found.
Despite initial efforts by firefighters from the Area 10 Fire Station, about 16 kilometres away, the fire has continued to rage due to ongoing construction within the market.
FCT Commissioner of Police, Ben Igweh, has dispatched operatives to the scene to prevent looting by hoodlums as traders attempt to salvage what is left of their wares. Additional fire trucks have also been sent to ensure the fire is brought under control.
