NASARAWA

The Nasarawa State Government has warned residents living around riverine communities in the State to evacuate from flood high-risk areas to avert the loss of lives, property and livelihoods in the event of flooding.

The Director General of the Nasarawa State Emergency Management Agency, Benjamin Akwash, gave the advice during a chat with ait.live in Lafia, the State capital.

Latest flood alert issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency listed Nasarawa as one of the States that will probably witness heavy flooding in 2025.

The State Emergency Management Agency boss therefore, urged residents to take the warning seriously to mitigate the potential impacts of the impending floods as he named 5 Local Government Areas likely to be affected to include; Lafia, Doma, Awe, Nasarawa and Toto.

Benjamin Akwash explained that NiMet had alerted Sokoto, Lagos, Nasarawa and 16 other States to be mindful of impending floods in July due to increasing rainfall.

Akwash advised residents to prioritise their safety above the long-held beliefs in ancestral homes, and move to high grounds to safeguard their lives, property, and livelihoods.

He said the Agency was looking ahead to procure speed boats and canoes, along with other safety kits to help in facilitating the evacuation of people from flood risk areas to safer grounds in the event of flooding.
