Flooding kills 8 people in Adamawa State

Authorities have confirmed the death of six people, with over 14,000 persons displaced as flooding sweeps through Shuwa and Kirchinga in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State, North-East Nigeria.

Houses, shops, boreholes, and many valuables have been destroyed after heavy rains in Madagali wreaked havoc on homes and businesses.

It is one of the worst flooding experienced in the affected communities, leaving in its trail immense destruction and losses

Social and economic activities remain grounded as the flood cut off Shuwa bridge which links Adamawa and Borno States.

While sympathising with the victims, Governor Ahmadu Fintiri said even though the warning on the flooding from the Nigeria Metrological Agency, NIMET came late, proactive measures for community awareness was not enough. He has pledged immediate provision of relief for flood after an earlier consignment sent through the Deputy Governor.

Governor Fintiri also says there is the urgent need to fix the collapsed bridge and road infrastructure along the Madagali-Michika Highway.

A victim of the flood, Ibrahim Lawan, told AIT.live that the downpour was intensified by water flowing down from the Mandara mountain amid the heavy rains, with people having little time to escape with their valuables

The communities worst hit by the flood include Kirchinga, Duhu, Maiwandu ,Jahili, Kokohu, Lumadu, Zhau, Palam, Kwambula, Shuware, and Shu.
